The Time Magazine World’s Greatest Places list has just been announced, and five U.S. cities made the list. Along with Detroit, the list also includes Park City, Utah, Miami, San Francisco, and (just outside the US) the Riviera Nayarit in Mexico. The list was compiled using the votes of an international network of contributors and correspondents. The magazine’s selection criteria focuses on evolving places that offer a fresh perspective.
Detroit made the list for its diverse and booming food scene, which has been recognized by Time Magazine as one of the best in the world. Some of the city’s notable eateries include Midnight Temple, an Indian gastropub near Eastern Market, Rosemary, a rosemary-filled cafe and cigar lounge, and What’s Crackin’, a seafood boil. Another popular destination is Basan, a Japanese robata restaurant.
The US and the neighboring Canada and Latin America are home to a wide array of cultural and natural wonders. The Canadian capital, Toronto, and Toronto’s hip West Coast centers were also included, as well as Detroit, Michigan’s “comeback city.” Other destinations include the Caribbean coast, and the provinces of New York and California. Among the cities in the list, Toronto, California, and the Riviera Nayarit of Mexico are popular vacation spots. Among Argentina’s top places are the city of Salta and its ski resort El Chalten, located in Los Glaciares National Park. Chile’s Rapa Nui, or Easter Island, is a volcanic wonder. Ecuador’s Galapagos Islands are also a top pick.
Detroit has made the Time Magazine World Greatest Places List for the next five years, according to their website. Besides Detroit, there are other cities in the United States on the list, including Park City (Utah), Miami, San Francisco, and Portland, Ore. Time magazine said the city’s “resilience, heritage, innovation, and diversity” made it one of the world’s most exciting cities to visit.
In addition to San Francisco, Seattle also made the list. The city is home to the Institute of Contemporary Art, which is opening in September. The new museum focuses on artists rather than institutions. It also prioritizes equity and the expansion of the canon. The city also boasts La Cocina Municipal Marketplace, a legendary women-owned business, and Fluid Cafe. The new Hyatt Regency Downtown SOMA and the 1 Hotel San Francisco are also on the list.
Some were likely surprised Detroit was named a World’s Greatest Places. But the magazine encourages people to visit this reborn city. Not only is the city’s revitalization a sign of the times, it is also the gateway to the rest of the state of Michigan, which has long been recognized as a premier travel destination. The recognition from Time magazine validates the city’s position as a world travel destination.
As the magazine celebrates its centennial, Sarasota has been hailed as a cultural hub. Its Sarasota Art Museum is one of the many attractions in this city. Orlando is also a “World’s Greatest Places,” as well as the far-flung islands of the Faroe Islands, Cairo, and Las Vegas. The list also includes Savannah and New Orleans, which was ranked number one in the U.S. and top 10 in the world.
